A THING INSIDE A THING

Continuing the exploration between container and object; “A Thing Inside A Thing” is the subsequent project to “A Thing”. This project is required to be an occupiable scale while pushing prior techniques from “A Thing” where color masks the overall form. The studio studies how techniques of emerging, obscuring, and hiding the interior object can influence the form of the exterior container.  

 

I am focusing on how primitive shapes, simple by themselves, create complex spaces when used simultaneously. Through systematically wrapping a bar around a cone I use three bars and three cones to develop the entire object form. The bar becomes the exterior container and cone is interior object to generate an entangled ontological relationship. The bars are always present on the exterior of the form while the cones are emerging, obscured, and hidden. An interesting relationship is created between bars and cones as they become codependent in their orientation- never seeing an entire bar or cone. In side elevation, intersection moments between wrapped bar and cone can be seen when one cannot define if the form is bar or cone.

On the interior, the cone presents itself as an object in space to give a glimpse of the objects orientation. The spatial effects created between bar and cone intersections are never the same. Sometimes you are in a bar/cone while in other spaces you are in a bar with a cone projecting into space. Sometimes the tip of the cone is present, sometimes the corner. This play between the objects allows for discovery and various experiences. 

 

Gradients and solid color are applied to mask the object form in elevation and only fully understanding it in the three-dimension. My objective is to mask the form to make a three-dimensional object look “flat”.  The color is strategically placed to break up the surface, again creating another layer that masks the object.
